Twin Cities Wedding Photographer // Hidden Falls Engagement

 01 St Paul Engagement Locations

SOLEMN SUMMERTIME

A HIDDEN FALLS ENGAGEMENT

This was one of my favorite engagement shoot last year – in large part because of Jane & Ryan’s opennes to do something a bit different from your standard engagement shoot. As a Twin Cities wedding photographer, Hidden Falls Park is one of my absolute favorite spots for an engagement in the woods.  In planning for this session, Jane was quite clear she wanted something a bit more brazen than your standard engagement photos.  Something with a mix of candid lifestyle portraiture & subtle romantic posing.  So you’ll see that for this shoot the mood is a little bit more subtle & serious.  How I approach a shoot really depends on the natural personality of the couple involved.  Nevertheless I was quite content to capture some of these shots, particularly the ones towards the end of the shoot, which have an almost sculptural romantic quality to them.

Engagement in the Woods

TIME FOR A FIELD TRIP

Place is a huge component with any engagement.  Choosing a Twin Cities engagement location is a big choice for most of my clients.  I do offer a special Field Guide of select locations I’ve shot at in the Metro area.  But I am also open to shooting at a local location meaningful to you both.

No matter where you choose to have your engagement, the character of the place will shine through in the photos.  Like any hike, trekking through the woods can be like a mini-adventure, almost like field trips felt when you were a kid.

CANDID, PHOTOJOURNALISTIC SHOTS

One of my favorite things about the image above is the candid, photojournalistic feel.  I’ll typically have couples do an activity during a segment of the engagement shoot to get these types of shots.

Another strategy I use is to keep talking, affirming, directing.  This helps couples not get too self-conscious, which usually happens when you’re too quiet behind the camera.

02 Romantic Engagement Posing

For this engagement I tried several different posing techniques than I normally do.  I’ve learned a lot through experimentation as a Twin Cities wedding photographer, but it all starts with a sturdy foundation of trust & comfort.  Most of the time I’ll ask you to do an action, but sometimes it’s easier just to tell you where to look and place your hands, etc.
